Intrepid Superhero Pets: Lassie, the Movie Star
Lassie has been a pop-culture star since the 40's, starring in her first film "Lassie Come Home" in 1943, and then a radio and TV show. The character has been onscreen for more than 60 years!
A successful breed
Lassie's breed, the Collie, is native of Scotland, mostly of the Highland regions but also bred in the Scottish Lowlands and northern England, where they were used primarily as a herding dog. Collies are a sensitive and smart dogs, known for their undying loyalty and amazing ability to foresee their owner’s needs. They are great family companions as well as capable herding dogs.
A true story
Lassie is one of three animals to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (silent-era stars Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart are the other two). According to writer Nigel Clarke in the "Shipwreck Guide to Dorset and South Devon", the original Lassie who inspired so many films and television episodes was a rough-haired crossbreed who saved the life of a sailor during World War I.
We can say that Jack deserves the title of "Intrepid Superhero Pet"!
